Foreigners who wish to work in Switzerland need a permit. Read our article about the requirements according to the Foreign Nationals Act (AuG) that must be met for individuals from third countries in order for an admission to be granted.

Individuals from third countries (non-EU/EFTA) who seek to stay in Switzerland for the purpose of non-self-employed work require a permit regardless of the length of stay. Foreigners can be admitted if:

  • The exercise of the gainful activity corresponds to the overall economic interest;
  • There is an application from an employer;
  • The limitation measures (federal and cantonal quotas) are complied with;
  • No suitable domestic worker or worker from countries with whom Switzerland has freedom of movement agreements could be found for the job;
  • Local, professional and industry-common wage and working conditions are met;
  • The foreigner is an executive, specialist, or other skilled worker who, in addition, demonstrates professional and social adaptability, appropriate language skills and can be expected to integrate sustainably both in the Swiss labor market and in the social environment;
  • And the foreigner has suitable housing.

If the application is accepted, the competent authority empowers the foreign representation to issue a visa. Before starting work, the foreign worker must register with the relevant local authority. If you want to immigrate to Switzerland from a third country, our lawyers will evaluate your situation comprehensively and on an individual basis. After receiving your inquiry, our lawyers will send you an estimate of the effort and costs involved in processing your case. You can then decide whether to accept the offer.
