Be sure to directly inform yourself about specific deadlines and reminder fees at the respective canton of residence!

By when do I need to submit the tax return?

The deadline for submitting the tax return varies from canton to canton. In most cantons, the regular deadline for natural persons is either March 31 or April 30 of the respective year. For legal entities, the regular deadline depending on the canton, is between June 30 and September 30 of the respective year.

Can the deadline be extended?

In principle, yes. An extension of the deadline can be requested with a simple application (usually online). However, the maximum extension also varies here. In most cantons, the deadline can be extended until November or even December without justification. This applies to both natural and legal persons.

If the deadline is still not enough, it is recommended to directly contact the tax office.

What happens if I miss the deadline?

Missing a deadline is not the end of the world. Anyone who does not submit the tax declaration on time will be reminded. In most cantons, two reminders are issued. Nevertheless, it is advisable to submit the tax returns on time, as in certain cantons the reminders incur fees. Fortunately, many tax offices are very lenient and issue reminders only a few days after the agreed deadline has passed.
